In my creative space this week I’ve been re-purposing in the simplest way possible:
I’ve had a few silk scarves hanging around for a while that I bought in various markets like this one.
I’ve been wanting to do something clothing wise with them for ages, but I hadn’t managed to find any inspiration… until I started knitting my shrug. The pattern is so simple (I am basically knitting a big ol’ square and then sewing it up at each end) that I thought, ‘my scarves are also made from big ol' squares. Surely the same principle would work on them too!'.
So I tried it…
This was the result (forgive the dodgy photo – I just couldn’t get the angle right).
What do you reckon? I'll try to get a better picture at some point. It feels like it will be lovely and light to wear on my shoulders in the summer. I now have to get on with converting the rest of the pile!

Paper Garlands and Gifting Bags
As I’ve mentioned before, my sister is getting married next year. Woo Hoo!
I’m still looking around for ideas I can send her way. As I love, love, love all things bunting related, I was really inspired by Frog Goose and Bears post on paper garlands, so I did a bit more digging around and found these garlands.
(I cant remember where the top image came from - eek! If you know let me know.
Bottom image from paper doll romance blog)
Aren’t they pretty! My sister loves music, so I was thinking that instead of using books we could use sheet music instead.
In other news, I decided to use the sewing paper idea to create some gifting bags. I don’t know about you but I love wrapping presents using brown paper and then adding a variety of bits and pieces to jazz it up a bit like this and this.
The thing is, I spend ages wrapping presents and needed a quick alternative. So… I created a few pouches.

(apologies for the colour balance on these pictures - its completely off - awful!)
They are perfect for small items and I can seal them up using my new fabric tape!
Ta da! Wrapping made easy!

Preparing for Easter
Anyone would think I had children with some of the projects I pick up, but no – just young at heart I guess!
This weekend I decided to get cracking on a bit of Spring/Easter decoration and managed to persuade my ever patient husband (often referred to as Mr. T, nothing to do with a love of bling – honest!) to help me blow some eggs!
Lots of fun ensued... If you’ve never done it before, make a small hole with a pin at the top of the egg (this can be a bit tough - hence Mr T's face), a slightly larger hole at the bottom and then basically… blow! Once the egg is out, rinse the egg in warm water with vinegar, then blow again. Then leave to dry and paint and tie with ribbon!
Here's my finished prototype.
It was supposed to be pink, but have turned out a bit more red than I had planned so I might need to re-paint it. I am planning to do a few more with a bit more colour variety in the next few days. So stay tuned to see the final result!

Food Glorious Food!
As I mentioned the other day I found myself in China Town at the weekend, so to switch things up a bit, I thought I do a food inspired post rather than a crafty one.
For anyone reading this that doesn’t know, I lived and worked in rural South West China for 2 years some time ago and loved, loved LOVED the food! I was lucky enough to live in one of the 3 chilli regions of China and the range of fresh (straight from the fields that morning), hot, salty and sour food was incredible! Since being back in the UK I haven’t been able to find anything even vaguely authentic so as often as I can, I cook up some of the dishes that my Chinese friends taught me.
Jiao zi (dumplings) are a favourite dish of mine and oh so simple to make.
They are a great Saturday night dish to cook up with family and friends as everyone can get involved in making them up. Heres a quick tutorial if you want to try them for yourself.
For approximately 50 Jiaozi (Myself and Mr. T manage about 15 each in one sitting) you need:
You can get most of the ingredients in the average supermarket although the chinese vinegar and Jaiozi skins are well worth a trip to the local Chinese supermarket. I usually buy a couple of packs of the skins as the freeze really well.
Mix all of the mixture together with a few glugs of soy sauce, a decent glug of Chinese vinegar.
To make the gorgeous little parcels, get yourself ready with a floured plate or two, your mixture, jaiozi skins nand a bowl of water.
Take one of the skins, place a decent teaspoon full of of the mixture in the centre.
Next dip a finger in the water and baste around the edge of the jiaozi skin
Now comes the tricky/fun part – folding the jaoizi. What you are aiming for is a parcel that fully seals the meat filling inside the parcel so ultimately, so long as you fold the parcel and press the edges together hard you will be all good. To make the pretty half moon shapes however... first hold the skin in half and press firmly in the middle.
Next fold one side in (getting a bit of an overlap on the top side) and do the same on the other side. Now sqeeze the edges together.
(Bonus shot taken by Mr T catching me in the middle of cooking)
Place on the floured plate. Put on a nice big pan of boiling water (with a bit of oil in the top) and drop in the dumplings. I’d advise doing them in rounds so they don’t all stick together. They should only need to cook for about 3 minutes. They’ll float when cooked.
Serve with a dipping sauce (3 parts vinegar to one part soy sauce and a nice spoonful of chilli – adjust to taste) and if you are feeling extra ambitious some stir fried greens (cooked with garlic and salt).
Tasty - even if I do say so myself!

- About 500 grams of pork mince (if you get some that has a bit of fat in it rather than the completely lean stuff it makes a nicer dumpling)
- Several garlic cloves (finely chopped)
- 3 or 4 spring onions (finely chopped)
- 4 cm chunk of fresh ginger (finely chopped)
- A couple of good pinches of salt
- Soy Sauce
- Chinese Vinegar
- Chinese Cabbage or Bai Cai (finely chopped)
- Fresh or dried chilli (optional)
- One pack of Jiaozi Skins (round ones) like these…

This weeks creative space - WIP
This week its all about the Work In Progress (WIP). I have several things on the burn at the same time…
First up, a messenger type bag for the spring/summer months. I got inspired by these linen and fabulously colourful Indian cottons at the weekend.
It will be mainly linen fronted with flashes of bold block colours wherever I can get them.
Next up is the summer shrug I started a few days ago. It is SLOW going!!!
At this rate its going to take me weeks, and weeks, and weeks…
Its only simple, but feels like a bit of a mountain to climb. Its been great company during the Jury service though. In go my earphones, and on goes the Moth podcast. If you've never listened to 'the Moth' you should totally check it out. Its live storytelling - sometimes funny, sometimes inspiring, sometimes really sad but always awesome! Click, click, click go the needles – all very therapeutic.
Finally, I’m making a little bag something like this for a soon to be birthday girl.
Its very simply going to be ribbons sewn onto felt and made into a quite tote. Happy looking isn’t it – even in non bag form!

Fabric Tape
Today my eyes fell on some left over double sided tape, and a stash of fabrics I had up on the side. I recalled a cute tutorial I saw on Between the Lines about making fabric tape, or 'DIY Japanese Masking Tape' as it was described. Either way it looked pretty simple so I had a go at making a few rolls.
I made a flowery one...
... a stripey one...
...and a colourful patterned one...
As it turns out it IS simple to make and a pretty addition to any wrapping!

In Awe!
Am on the train into London watching this woman crochet what looks like a beautiful baby blanket. She is AMAZING! She must have knitted about a quarter of a blanket over the course of the short journey. Wow! I have been standing here ummming and errring about whether to take a sneaky picture, but figured that it would be a bit creepy.... so I havnt. I did feel the need to share though. Horray for posting from your phone!

Lazy Sundays
I had big plans to post about all the stuff I’ve been up to this weekend, but you know what – I am bushed! So a short but pretty post for a lazy Sunday evening…
On Saturday I ended up in China Town buying orchids. I wouldn’t normally buy any (they are not my favourite flower/plant), but I had to make up the balance to be able to use my card and they were the nearest things to hand. But how glad was I that I got them – they are gorgeous!
They have brightened up the whole house - quite literally!
Here they are on the mantle piece…
( I love those old fashioned cola bottles)
…and in the bathroom…
(note the slight sad looking recovering orchid sitting along the shelf from its pretty neighbour. Hopefully it will be inspired - I've been waiting for it to re-bloom for about a year!)
…and in the bedroom…
(I love that small Chinese calligraphy. It was for me by my shu fa (calligraphy) teacher before I left China for home. More on Chinese inspired bits and pieces in the week)
Aaaaaah – So pretty! Perfect for a lazy Sunday. :-)
p.s. Had I have been on the ball I would have joined in with Kirsty's 'Snoop' with something like this a few weeks ago - I always find that kind of thing interesting. In a way this can act as a late entry...
There are quite a few random bits and pieces lying around our house, like the fabric tape on the mantle piece that I made this weekend and my buddha picture from thailand that really needs to be put in a proper frame! I always forget they are there - but see that flash of red up at the top of picture two - that is my chinese Tai Ji (Tai Chi in the west) fans. I learnt a bit when I lived there. Mostly I associate the fans with what was my favourite time of day - dusk. I'd go out running on the college track, the bats would be flying overhead and the chinese grandmothers would be doing Tai Ji Fan in the centre. As I ran past them I'd periodically here the clack of the fans opening and closing in the dark. I've just had a quick shufty and theres a good utube video of Tai Ji Fan here if you are interested. Its great for calming/ centring yourself. Plus its a martial art that is kick ass and uses fans - whats not to love!
Anyway I digress... bedtime I think!

Clear Blue Skies in London Town
Today has been the most GORGEOUS day in London. Clear blue skies and smell of spring in the air (literally I can smell blossom everywhere).
I made it to the cloth house, and had to try really hard to keep to my shopping list. I could spend an absolute fortune in there if I wasnt careful! Anyway I am very pleased with my purchases. More on that in the week.
For now – the oatmeal cotton wool I mentioned yesterday...
As you can see, it of the Debbie Bliss variety. I just LOVE the colour. It just looks so cool and lovely. I bought a cotton wool rather than a woolly wool to make this shrug for the summer. Its not the most exciting thing to make, but I've never knitted a piece of clothing before so I figured something simple was probably the best way forwards!
I have had to buy some new tools to make my shrug – circular needles! Eeek!
They have taken a bit of getting used to, but I think I’m starting to get the hang of it.
One additional bonus to the day...scones...
...I whipped 'em up in about 20 minutes flat during the rugby. Awesome!
I love Saturdays!

Thanks… and Stickers
Just a quick little note to say thank you for all the kind comments about business ideas and the very popular Moo minicards!
I forgot to add the Moo stickers I got at the same time, so heres a little treat for you.
I couldn't decide on one design so I got a multipack. Cool eh!
Oh, and the creative juices seem to be flowing again. I bought a ton of a lovely oatmeal colour cotton wool today to make a summer shrug with and I’m off to the Cloth House tomorrow to stock up – yay! So hopefully some actual crafting will happen this week!
Have a good weekend one and all.x

This weeks creative space - minicards rule!
So with ongoing work commitments, the next two weeks tied up in Jury Service (!?!) and assignment deadlines looming, I have had even less time to craft this week then last!
I have been creating however…
Mini Cards!!!
'Cute, but why?' you might ask...
Well, whilst I generally craft for my own kicks (I’m itching to get back to actually making something - funny how much I miss it when I can't do it), I would love to be able to sell some of what I make.
...One of my favourite daydreams is that I live in a sunny farmhouse in the country, pad around barefoot, make lots of scones/ other baked goods and sustain my way of life by crafting for a living... we can but dream...
In reality, I simply tend to make duplicates of whatever is on my crafting list that week and I can’t gift them all! So the way i figure it, they may as well go to a loving home somewhere else! Fortunately I promised myself at the start of the year, that I would slowly start finding ways of selling a few bits and pieces... hence the cards.
Now whilst I don't have anything to sell yet, or even a functioning shop to sell anything in for that matter (well i have a shell of an etsy shop but nothing worth peeking at yet) I got quite excited about Moo's minicards - so I took my first step towards meeting my new years resolution and created myself a few business type cards. I LOVE them! It perked up my day no end when they arrived. I will probably spend the next 6 months giving them out with gifts, rather than sending them out with items bought, but thats okay. At least its a start!

Do nothing for 2 minutes
I was having a little break from my assignment (I'm on 2000 out of 3000 words so I'm allowed), and was doing a bit of aimless blog wandering when I came upon Victoria's post where she talked about needing just 2 minutes rest/time to herself. Someone pointed her towards a webpage that I have also just visited, and now feel mega blissed out! So I thought I'd share the bliss...
Most specifically, I want to share the bliss with my friend (I know she looks in here from time to time). Today she looked like she could quite happily curl up into a quiet corner somwhere and stay there a while. Not to say she looked anything less than her usual fabulous self, but there were a few stifled yawns ...
So my lovely friend, until you get your much deserved r&r, find yourself a sneaky corner and do nothing for 2 minutes...
